Over the past 6-8 months I've developed friendships with some of the staff and students at Fraser Valley Christian High School. (I've written about this unique school previously on WorD.) These people are an inspiration to me; when they get passionate about something they get involved! I've asked my friend Matt Beimers, one of the vice-principals there, to write up a brief word on what they've been up to.
Fraser Valley Christian High recently completed a “Make Poverty History” Chapel. The chapel included some wonderful singing by Laurell Hubick, a local artist as well as a World Vision Advocate. The chapel focused on the Make Poverty History videos, including the “Click” video as well as the video featuring Nelson Mandella. Over 400 signed a letter to Paul Martin calling for the Prime Minister to play an important role in the G8 summit this coming summer. The school has sold or given away over 100 Make Poverty History wrist bands to it students and staff. students
The school continues to find ways to get involved locally and globally, with almost 500 students participating in a local service day in the Lower Mainland on Wednesday, May 18. One group made 60 lunches and headed to the downtown Eastside (see Mike’s recent post about the D.T.E.S) where it took less than 10 minutes to give the brown bags away. Another group collected almost $200 in bottles and cans in less than an hour and has purchased some goats for South Africans through different relief agencies. Other examples of local service included a free carwash-no donations allowed-for anyone who stopped by, cleaning out a former “greenspace” in a local park, serving lunches for the Salvation Army in Surrey, and weeding the gardens for some of its neighbors.
Kudos to the staff for creating this incredible environment, where they give the students constant opportunities to lead. While many of us sit at the edges lamenting the fact that there is "nothing we can do", these young people are jumping right into the deep end. What an example!
