I don't believe in charity. I believe in solidarity. Charity is so vertical. It goes from the top to the bottom. Solidarity is horizontal. It respects the other person and learns from the other. I have a lot to learn from other people.
Eduardo Galeano

How far we've come from the days when Charity meant love. Solidarity is awesome, but no matter what we call it it will always be something of an act of condecension to give to the poor - which is, I think, a tragic recognition that a gulf between the "haves" and the "have-nots" exists. Only when you "sell all your possessions and give to the poor" (making you poor in the process, I suspect) does it become true solidarity.
I wonder what the homeless think about Christmas. All the displays, the shopping, the sudden and inexplicable generosity once a year, and then Dec.26th comes and people stop giving again. I wonder if it all seems like such a sham to them. Just something I was thinking about today.
