And I Thought We Were the Socialists!
I got a chuckle out of this as I read through my emails this morning. This is for my American friends who like to tease me about living in "socialist" Canada.
First, from White House Explores Aid for Auto Deal we read that:
People familiar with the discussions said the administration wanted to provide financial assistance to the deeply troubled Big Three Detroit automakers, possibly by using the Treasury Department’s wide-ranging authority under the $700 billion bailout program that Congress approved this month.
Then immediately after reading that I took note of this poll from the Globe & Mail (one of Canada's national papers for those of you who don't get out much.)
(My own views for those who are interested: I'm not against nationalization--which is what a bailout is, like it or not--but a domestic auto industry is not a must-have. As much as it will hurt on the employment side of the equation, I don't think the industry should be bailed out. The employment bullet must be bitten eventually anyway... this is a dying industry as far as labour is concerned.)
