Last night I spent a little time on the Great Circle Mapper and calculated that I flew a little over 90,000 kms in 2008, or 56,000 miles. That's more than twice around the circumference of the earth, which is cool, but it also leaves one large carbon footprint, which is not. My only consolation--and it isn't much--is that I bought offsets for most of that travel.
I've got a minimum of 2 trips to Africa already penciled in for next year, so we'll have to see how 2009 shapes in the travel department. (h/t to Ewan McIntosh--who flew a lot farther than I did this year--for the Mapper)

I traveled 46,000 km (22 flights, not counting float plane trips). Can you hear the clomp of my carbon foot print? ouch!

I thought you'd be interested to hear about Better World Books.
I am a High School teacher in Philadelphia, and I've traveled to Gulu, Uganda twice now with Invisible Children. Students at my school are organizing a book drive through Invisible Children this year. They are working with Better World Books to increase literacy and book access across Africa and the world.
Since you're environmentally conscious and you love to read, check out http://www.betterworld.com/
