N.T. Wright gave a straightforward and elegant speech in the House of Lords today. You can read the entire transcript on the Empire Remixed blog, but here's the killer line for me:
The very rich are doing for the very rich what they have refused to do for the very poor.
Devastating. Here's a thought: All you pastors out there, all you folks who will step into a pulpit this Sunday... make that line your text. Nothing else, just that. On second thought, you could mix in some of the Gospels and see where that takes you.
At the risk of appearing like I'm somehow boasting, that line reminded me of this one, from a few days ago:
That's the reality--we need the poor to be poor so that we can be rich.
In fact, earlier today I recycled that line on Twitter as my Thought of the Day. I think I was channeling the good Bishop today...
