...What Would Jesus Dance To?
This may seem like a linking of random thoughts, but you'll have to take my word for it - in my head it all makes sense.
For the past few days I've been grooving to British Sea Power's incredible video for Please Stand Up. (Watch the complete video here.) Call me an ignorant colonialist, but this is the first I've heard of them, and I am absolutely in love with this song.
Yes, yes, I know MTV banned the video based on the use of the lyrics "wetter and wetter". Yet, Britney can just about have an orgasm in her videos and nobody seems to care. Ridiculous. I love the song and I love the video, both of which are incredibly produced.
Last night, as I was dialed in to the video, I came across this little bite of sage wisdom (audio clip) from our friend Bono. (Yes, the clip is from Relevant Magazine. That's two references to that magazine in two days. I can't really see that happening again, but stranger things have happened.)
"God is interested in truth, and only in truth. And that's why God is more interested in Rock & Roll music than Gospel... If you can't write about what's really going on in the world and your life, because it's all happy-clappy... Is God interested in that? I mean, 'Please, don't patronize Me!'"
(Listen to the complete clip to hear what he says about worship. Outstanding.)
I think there is a link here. It will take a greater mind than mine to adequately explain it, but it's there. God is interested in truth. Artists are in the business of telling truth. God is the great Creator. This may help explain when I often feel God's presence listening to someone sing about life, and feel nothing (sometimes) when they sing about God. Just a thought.
