This quote was waiting for me in my Fast Company's First Impression email this morning:
"See the broad possibilities and take a more open-minded approach."
Obviously the accompanying article has nothing to do with faith issues, but it made me stop and think. Why is it we are so willing to see the "broad possibilities" with so many aspects of our life, yet many of us are so rigid and close-minded when it comes to faith?
As is often the case, I have a theory.
For many, our faith is comprised of a series of propositions and doctrines. This is a house of cards. There can be no uncertainty, because if one card gets pulled, or even slightly shaken, the whole thing collapses. By necessity, then, we spend our lives patrolling the outer walls, making sure no one messes with the cards.
Our faith is one of paradox; if you don't see that then your Bible is missing a lot of pages. The only mortar that holds paradoxes together is mystery.
