On Saturday Sue and I hung out with David and Shiz for a while. David shared some reflections from India - particularly the apparent universal need of human kind for forgiveness. (Be sure to read his thoughts here. And let me say again how incredible his images are. Go look... we'll wait.)
I recalled how in the purest or "high" traditions of Buddhism and Hinduism there is actually no supreme Deity in the equation. Yes, we are to achieve release and freedom through the help of others, even the help of low and mid level gods, but ultimately it is through our own effort. And yet, the popular forms of both religions leave much room for various supreme deities.
It seems that deep down we know we cannot do it on our own... that redemption does require a God.
