It looks like the LRA is at it again. This is from Invisible Children:
UNICEF has confirmed that ninety school-aged children were abducted by Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) forces last Wednesday, September 17th, in the north-eastern border region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The rebels abducted 50 children from a primary school in Kiliwa Town and 40 students from a secondary school the town of Duru. These attacks occurred simultaneously and with devastating affects. In conjunction with the abductions, several civilians are reported to have been killed and the entire village of Kiliwa, except for the health center, was burnt to the ground. The LRA also attacked a south Sudanese army post with a force of approximately 100 rebels. The Congolese Army and UN Peacekeeping forces have deployed to the region in recent months with the goal of protecting the civilian population from attacks, but some say that this has merely instigated more violence as the LRA is feeling threatened and desperate.
International attention has grown in the past few weeks due to the recent attacks and because of the regional instability from the LRA activity. United States Senator Russ Feingold addressed Congress on September 16th saying, "Rather than intensify efforts to engage and pressure Kony to accept the agreement, the United States and others have downscaled our efforts." Sen. Feingold added that "without expanded resources and capacity focused on this problem, a completely new offensive runs a high risk of exacerbating the region's volatility".
